Senegal’s High Court recognized the victory of opposition candidate Bassir Diomaye Faye in the last presidential election, Reuters reported on March 30.
The Constitutional Council of Senegal verified on Friday, March 29, the voting results of 100% of the country’s electoral colleges and confirmed the preliminary results, according to which Faye won the first round.
On March 24, presidential elections were held in Senegal. Faye won with 54% of the votes, his main rival, the representative of the ruling coalition Amadou Ba, received about 35% of the votes.
The inauguration of Bassirou Diomaia Faye will take place on April 2. The 44-year-old politician will become the youngest president in the country’s history. He will succeed Macky Sall as president.
Bassirou Diomaye Fay is an ally of the famous opposition politician Ousmane Sonko, a consistent pan-Africanist and “anti-Western”, supporter of Senegal’s sovereign policy. Sonko was not allowed to participate in the elections due to criminal proceedings.
