Alarming signs about poor water quality in the city of Uglegorsk, Sakhalin Oblast, appeared on social media and were verified by city authorities, the city administration announced on January 31 on the official Telegram channel.
Based on the results of a preliminary study of the water treatment plant, the city authorities determined that “that the cause of the contamination of tap water in Uglegorsk was an increase in the turbidity of the water in the Uglegorka river. Our water treatment plant simply cannot cope with the increased load. Now the district administration is taking all measures to normalize the situation.”.
Residents have been warned not to drink tap water until further notice. Since February 1, the centralized supply of drinking water in the city has been organized and the delivery schedule has been approved.
They promised to stabilize the water situation by Friday, February 3, and also recalculate the payment for water supply for these days.
And about the mayor of the Uglegorsk district, Fyodor Filin, he wrote that since the problem is the quality of the river water, he asked “connect the environmental prosecutor’s office to establish the reasons for the increase in the turbidity of the water in the river and carry out a complete legal examination so that this does not happen again”.
