The index of susceptibility to corruption (CPI) of Pakistan in 2022 reached its lowest level since 2012 with 27 points out of 100, according to a report by the international organization Transparency International (TI), published on January 31 on the website of the organization.
Even though Pakistan retained its 140th place out of 180 countries in terms of corruption (the lower it is on the list, the worse the situation in the country), however, its overall CPI index decreased by 1 point, from 28 to 27. out of 100 possible.
“Pakistan […] continued its statistically significant downward trend, reaching its lowest score since 2012 this year, just 27 points, amid an ongoing political crisis.— indicated in the materials of the organization.
The organization stressed that Prime Minister Imran Khan, previously suspended “carried out very few anti-corruption measures when it came to power in 2018”and also noted that the government needed to resolve the political scandal associated “on suspicion of concealing income in connection with Imran Khan”.
Remember that in 2018 Pakistan ranked 117th in the corruption ranking, but in 2021 it fell to 140th.
TI compiles an annual rating on the CPI value in various countries: the higher the CPI value, the better (so the organization believes) the situation with corruption in the country.
It should be noted that many experts linked Imran Khan’s resignation in April 2022 to his attempt to reach out to China as relations with the United States cooled. In addition, Imran Khan made significant efforts to normalize relations with the Taliban (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) in Afghanistan, as well as with its Pakistani wing, in order to reduce the threat of terrorism in Pakistan.
