The construction of the world’s largest supercomputer, codenamed “Stargate” for OpenAI and the corresponding data center, will be funded by Microsoft, The Information Resource reported on March 31, citing its own sources close to the project.
The project will play a key role in training and operating new, more advanced artificial intelligence models that are significantly superior to the current ChatGPT-4.
According to the portal, the cost of the project could amount to more than 100 billion dollars and the energy consumption of the finished facility could reach 5 gigawatts. Presumably, the construction of the data center will take about 6 years and will require several hundred hectares of land. At the same time, the launch of the data center could take place as early as 2028.
The project will require millions of specialized AI chips. According to the portal, the project may shed light on rumors that OpenAI plans to build a plant for the production of specialized chips for artificial intelligence. Since it is the shortage of chips that can become a limiting factor for the construction of a supercomputer of this type.
Let us remind you that OpenAI currently uses Microsoft’s Azure cloud service to power its artificial intelligence systems projects. In late 2023, Microsoft unveiled two of its own AI chips and Nvidia recently announced its most powerful AI accelerator, the Blackwell B200.
