German Finance Minister Christian Lindner spoke out on April 1 against the introduction of universal conscription, the DPA news agency reports.
“The economic costs of universal conscription would be too high given the labor shortage in an aging society.”she said.
Lidner emphasized that he does not like the idea of carrying out a medical examination on everyone of the same age, who are then not even called.
The minister is confident that instead of universal conscription, it is better to strengthen the reserve. In this case, citizens can simultaneously pursue civilian professional activities and also be at the disposal of the Bundeswehr on a voluntary basis.
Recall that at the beginning of March information appeared in the German media that the head of the Ministry of Defense, Boris Pistorius, had given instructions to develop a model of compulsory military service. According to Spiegel, there can be talk of introducing compulsory military service by 2025.
The Swedish recruitment system is considered as an example.
