Russia’s largest first-class blast furnace at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant will be shut down for major repairs, the press service of the Severstal company reported on April 1.
We are talking about oven number 5 (DP-5) “Severyanka”. Investments for overhauling the furnace will amount to 37 billion rubles. It is reported that the main objective of the renovation is to ensure the reliability and performance of this strategically important facility.
Companies from Russia and China will participate in the repair of equipment and the supply of materials for the works. The general contractor is the Severstal Domnaremont Center structure.
Severstal CEO Alexander Shevelev said the company has developed a number of measures that will prevent a decrease in steel production during repairs.
During the work, the refractory lining of the furnace and the elements of the cooling system, the upper dome and chimney protection, all metal structures and linings of hot air ducts and much more will be completely replaced. The project also provides for the renovation of energy installations.
Recall that the Metals & Mining Intelligence (MMI) agency previously reported on an increase in the cost of several types of rolled steel. Last year, their prices in Russia increased tens of percent. PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works and Severstal explained this situation by limiting supply due to planned and unscheduled repairs. It is also reported that in 2024 Russia could increase stainless steel imports to a record 487-492 thousand tons from 2019.
