A runaway public transport bus in the Brazilian town of Jaboatau dos Guararapes, neighboring Recife, the capital of Pernambuco state, drove into a crowd of worshipers taking part in a traditional Easter procession late on Sunday, killing five people. and injured 27 more people, most of them seriously. On the morning of Monday, April 1, only one of the 27 victims was discharged from the hospital.
The tragedy occurred on Avenida Barreto de Meneses, a hill known as Ladeira Adelaida and quite steep, less than 400 meters from the church of Nossa Senhora do Perpetuo Socorro, where the religious action ended with a mass. Having completely lost control, the bus crawled out onto the sidewalk, where a crowd had squeezed in. Having noticed a car coming down the hill, it crashed into a wall and drove several meters, passing many people.
When the car finally stopped, amid cries of pain from some people and the despair of the crowd at the scale of the tragedy, the driver fled the scene and appeared this Monday at the city police station, accompanied by lawyers. Five of the fatal victims died at the scene of the tragedy, and the wounded were taken to hospitals in Jaboatano dos Guararapis and Recife, depending on the severity of their injuries.
Some people after the tragedy reported that they saved themselves by clinging as hard as they could to the wall, as they had nowhere to escape, and that they even felt parts of the car hit their back, which in their case resulted in minor injuries. This Monday, as a sign of mourning, people painted the avenue and the wall at the site of the tragedy and laid flowers.
