Packets of cocaine were found along the coast of Mayo island in Cape Verde, the archipelago’s judicial police said on Monday, revealing details of a case in which nine people are in pre-trial detention.
Mayo Island is just over 20 kilometers from Santiago, the capital island of Praia.
“Following the appearance of packages of drugs (cocaine) in the coastal areas of Mayo Island and an investigation carried out by the Judicial Police in collaboration with the National Police,” the SP arrested 19 people a week ago, the statement explained.
All detainees (including three women) are Cape Verdean citizens born on the islands of Mayo and Santiago, aged between 23 and 46 years.
The operation included searches in the homes of 22 people and resulted in the seizure of “a certain amount of high-purity cocaine, more than 200,000 escudos (1,815 euros) in cash, as well as other items of evidentiary value,” he added. PJ.
The court ordered the nine suspects to be placed in preventive detention, the Justice Ministry said on Saturday.
Ten more people cannot leave Mayo Island.
The detainees are suspected of committing crimes related to the illicit trafficking of especially dangerous drugs, a criminal community of drug trafficking, aggravated robbery and money laundering.
The Central Investigation Department for Combating Drugs and Organized Crime (SCITECO) SP participated in the police operation.
“The action is part of a plan to prevent and combat domestic drug trafficking and is being investigated by the Main Directorate for Criminal Cases of the Prosecutor General’s Office under the conditions of maintaining judicial secrecy,” he concluded.
