Mozambique created nearly 450,000 jobs in 2023, exceeding forecasts and the highest annual figure since 2019, according to government data accessed by Lusa on Tuesday.
According to budget performance data from January to December, the public and private sectors added 446,483 jobs during 2023, more than the 381,759 initially projected, and only surpassed 2019’s 478,904 jobs.
The government’s target is to create 2,952,907 jobs between 2020 and 2024.
The Mozambican government previously announced that the country recorded economic growth of 5% in 2023, up from 4.4% in 2022, highlighting “economic growth” that outperformed the Southern African Development Community (SADC) regional average.
“Economic growth will reach 5% in 2023, up from 4.4% in 2022, thanks to, among others, extractive industries, tourism, agriculture, transport and communications,” Ludovina Bernardo, a government spokeswoman, said in February. following the meeting of the Council of Ministers in Mozambique, where the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) for 2023 was reviewed.
Mozambique’s leader said the growth was the result of policies and reforms implemented throughout the year, especially economic reforms adopted to “greater dynamism” of economic activity in the private sector and attract investment.
