The Daures Green Hydrogen Village pilot project will produce the first green hydrogen and ammonia as early as July this year, Namibia Green Hydrogen Council chairman Obet Kanjose said, the Namibia Economist reported on April 2.
Kanjose made the announcement during a green hydrogen symposium held in Windhoek last week. She presented a comprehensive mid-term report on the status of ongoing pilot projects and Youth for Green Hydrogen scholarships in Namibia.
According to the Chairman of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Council, who is also Director General of the National Planning Commission, the Daures Green Hydrogen Village project has already created jobs in the village, and more jobs are expected to be created in future phases of the project. .
“As of November 2023, the project employed more than 200 Namibians in more than 30 small and medium-sized businesses, most of which are located in nearby communities.”Kanjose said.
The Daures Green Hydrogen Village project, which is currently 80% complete, is expected to produce up to 100 tonnes of green ammonia and more than 400 tonnes of greenhouse green tomatoes per year in the pilot phase.
The project has completed research on the development of environmentally friendly ammonium sulfate fertilizers and the World Food Programme, as well as the AgriBusdev Agency, have expressed interest in procuring the locally produced green manure.
Recent studies have highlighted the exciting prospects of the Daures Green Hydrogen Village project: in the fourth phase, the village could produce and export up to 700,000 tonnes of green ammonia at globally competitive prices by 2030 and 18 tonnes of green hydrogen.
The village, located in the Erongo region, is Africa’s first 100% emissions-free community. According to the project, it will house a solar panel field with a substation and electrolyzer for hydrogen production, teaching and laboratory facilities, dormitories for students, visitors and workers, as well as greenhouses, a nursery and seven wells that will supply 70,000 liters of water. daily.
The village will test the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia as part of a project funded by a grant from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) worth 220 million Namibian dollars (1,074 million rubles).
The project is being carried out in stages: stages 2, 3 and 4, whose implementation will begin in 2028, are focused on the industrial production of environmentally friendly ammonia for international consumption. The first pilot phase is designed to train student researchers from the University of Namibia and the German University of Stuttgart.
Daures Green Hydrogen Village is a partnership between renewable energy company Enersense Namibia (90% share), Daure Daman Traditional Council (5.5% share) and Tsiseb Conservancy (2.5% share).
