The Belgian government announced on Tuesday that it would send the military at France’s request to beef up security at the 2024 Paris Olympics, mainly to search for and defuse explosive devices.
“The French government has requested Belgium’s contribution to the protection and security of the Games. The Belgian Ministry of Defense has analyzed the request and concluded that it can make a contribution,” Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder told RTL radio.
According to the minister, Belgian support will be provided in the “area of searching and neutralizing explosive devices.”
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, with the opening ceremony taking place on the Seine River, where various delegations will march on board boats.
The six-kilometre route will host art shows in front of an estimated 300,000 spectators, with the French capital expecting 15 million tourists during the sporting event.
Following the recent attack in Moscow that killed at least 143 people, the French government has raised the terror alert to the highest level.
