NGO founded by Spanish chef suspends operations in Gaza after ‘inexcusable’ attack that killed 7 staff

Non-governmental organization (NGO) World Central Kitchen suspended its activities in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday following the death of seven aid workers in an apparent Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip. The NGO said the attack was a “tragedy” and something “unforgivable.”

“We understand that members of the World Central Kitchen team were killed in an IDF attack while they were working to support our efforts to deliver humanitarian food to Gaza,” a spokeswoman for the organization said Monday evening.

The victims were citizens of “Australia, Poland, the United Kingdom, a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, and three Palestinians,” his statement said.

“Humanitarian workers and civilians should never be targeted,” Linda Roth stressed in a statement published on the social network X (formerly Twitter) by the organization founded by Spanish chef José Andrés. The victims were driving two armored cars.

Israeli Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said he had personally spoken to Spanish chef José Andrés, founder of the humanitarian group, to express condolences over the workers’ deaths and that Israel was promising to investigate the attack.

“We will launch an investigation to analyze this serious incident. This will help reduce the risk of a similar event occurring” in the future, he said, adding that it was being reviewed “at the highest level.”

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday expressed condolences to the family of the deceased Polish volunteer. “We express our deepest condolences to the family of the volunteer who provided assistance to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip,” the ministry said in a post on social media platform X.

Ursula von der Leyen also expressed her “deepest condolences to the families and friends” of the NGO staff, but did not condemn the Israeli bombing that killed them. “I pay tribute to the World Central Kitchen workers who died in Gaza. World Central Kitchen is a critical partner in alleviating suffering in Gaza, including through the transport of food along the sea corridor,” he says.
