At least 29 people were killed Tuesday and eight others were injured in a fire that broke out during restoration work at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, the local governor’s office said, according to a report. CNN. The previous balance showed 15 deaths.
Seven of the eight injured were in critical condition, Imamoglu said, adding that the fire had been extinguished and the wounded were being treated at nearby hospitals.
Firefighters and other rescue workers surrounded the charred entrance to the nightclub, which occupies two floors beneath a 16-story building in the city’s Gairettepe district.
An investigation into the incident has already begun, the city administration said in a statement. Five people were also arrested, including three who ran the nightclub and one who was responsible for renovations, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç said.
“Site inspections and evidence collection are ongoing, and a team of three experts specializing in occupational health and fire safety continues to work to determine the cause of the fire,” he added.
