Nine people were killed and seven injured in floods that hit southern Mozambique more than a week ago, Council of Ministers spokesman Filiman Suaze said on Tuesday.
Suaze spoke at a press conference following the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers.
“Urban floods” devastated the city of Maputo and the municipalities of Matola, Boane and Xai Xai, completely destroying 99 houses and partially destroying 173 houses, a Council of Ministers spokesman said.
The weather also completely damaged 61 schools and partially damaged 113, affecting more than 100,000 students and 800 teachers.
More than 60 health facilities were also damaged by the floods, Filimau Suaze said.
“The ideal would be if we had zero deaths, zero injuries, zero flooded homes and zero destroyed roads, but nowhere in the world is it possible to achieve 100% prevention,” Suaze said.
The government played its “role as far as conditions allowed,” he added.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries hardest hit by global climate change, experiencing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season.
