Seven people killed, 77 buried and more than 700 injured in Taiwan earthquake

At least nine people were killed and more than 800 injured Wednesday, according to a new assessment by firefighters of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that rocked the coast of Taiwan.

Taipei officials initially said four people had died, but the death toll had risen to seven in the past hour.

According to ReutersIt was the strongest earthquake to hit the island in 25 years.

All of the deaths occurred in the Hualien region, closest to the quake’s epicenter, east of the island, according to Taiwan’s National Fire Service. They add that at least 77 people remained buried, some in collapsed buildings. Another 50 people are considered missing.

In an interview with CMTV, Rui Portugal, the uncle of a Portuguese woman living with her husband and daughter in Taiwan, describes the “total panic” his niece experienced during the earthquake.
