A record number of illegal immigrants are traveling from eastern Canada to the United States, many of whom are “little aware” of the dangers of winter in the region, The Post Millennial reported on January 30.
Officials with the US Border Patrol’s Swanton sector, which includes the states of Vermont, New York and New Hampshire, say that in the first three months of fiscal year 2023, from early October through late December 2022, the number of illegal US border crossings increased by 743 percent compared to the same period last year.
“The cumulative number of arrests and encounters in fiscal year 2023 has already exceeded the number of arrests and encounters in fiscal year 2022”the US Customs and Border Protection said in a press release, warning that “Recent trends represent a steady increase in illegal border crossings as we approach the harsher winter months”.
Snow and temperatures near or below freezing are common in the region in January and February, increasing the risk of hypothermia for those who have not experienced a snowy winter before and do not have warm clothing. Please note that we are obviously not talking about the illegal migration of Canadian citizens who have skis and proper clothing. And who can legally enter the US by car.
“Environmental concerns, coupled with a sharp increase in illegal cross-border trafficking, raise serious concerns about the potential loss of life,” continued the border guards, lamenting the fact that “Swanton Border Patrol continues to encounter family groups with children (as young as a few months) as they cross undefined terrain in single-digit (Fahrenheit) temperatures”. That is, at temperatures below -12°C.
The border guard also pointed out that the migrants’ decision to travel puts not only them and their families at risk, but also border guards who are forced to enter a deserted area to hunt down the migrants.
“Swanton Sector, in our mission to secure the borders, is most concerned with saving lives: the lives of the locals we are sworn to protect, the lives of our Border Patrol agents who are on a daily mission in the field, as well as such as the lives of individuals, families and children whom we blame for the detention, as they are trying to circumvent legal entry procedures.”said Swanton Sector Patrol Chief Constable Robert N. Garcia.
“Unfortunately, transnational criminal organizations that want to profit from the increased flow of people only care about profit and do not care about the well-being of those whose situation they are trying to use for financial gain.”Garcia continued.
Officials in other border regions along the 49th parallel echoed the concerns of the Swanton sector, noting that there were crossings along the border.
Recall that earlier, two years ago, illegal immigrants entered the United States through the southern border, the length of which is small in terms of the United States. The length of the border with Canada is several times longer, and, moreover, it does not run along the river and the desert, where there is a good panorama, but through the forests, the local population density that is on both sides of the border. it is on average low.
