The reason for the chimpanzee’s escape from the Furuviksparken zoo in December 2022 was staff mistakes, the zoo’s press service reported on the official Internet portal on February 1.
Earlier, on December 14, several chimpanzees escaped from an enclosure in Furuviksparken. In order to eliminate the danger to people, it was decided to shoot the escaping animals. Four of the seven chimpanzees were shot. According to the zoo’s own investigation, the monkeys escaped through a barred door that was left open.
During the cleaning of two enclosures, the chimpanzees were in the third enclosure. The staff member cleaning the premises did not lock the barred door. Another staff member checked the locks on the doors before releasing the animals into the clean enclosure, but was unable to verify that the barred door was locked.
“In light of what happened, it is clear that our chimpanzee confinement procedure was flawed.”Sandra Wilke, CEO of the park, said in a statement.
The director general noted that the zoo has developed a new procedure for confining chimpanzees, taking into account the mistakes made. Thus, a checklist has been drawn up and the knowledge requirements of the staff about the animals have also been increased.
“In addition, we will be conducting a thorough review of all closure procedures at the zoo. We will do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”Wilke said.
