More than 600 people still need to be rescued after Taiwan earthquake

This Thursday, the death toll rose to 10 after a strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Taiwan on Wednesday, while more than 660 people remain to be rescued. For the most part, they are trapped in tunnels or isolated mountainous areas, the access roads to which have been destroyed.

Authorities have already been able to contact many of the tourists stranded in hotels in Taroko National Park and have confirmed that they are okay. Another 60 people were rescued this Thursday from a mine in Hualien, the area hardest hit by the earthquake, and six more miners trapped in the quarry were also safely evacuated.

At least 40 people are missing and aid teams continue to search for survivors in a race against time.

Meanwhile, work has already begun to clear the rubble and demolish the damaged buildings. More than 90 buildings were damaged and more than 200 people were forced to remain in shelters. Almost 10 thousand families were left without water and more than 300 without electricity. More than 300 tremors have rocked the island since Wednesday. The government has warned of the danger of landslides and rockfalls.
