The Indian Army has received the first batch of 24 Russian Igla-S man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) and 100 missiles for them, the Economic Times reported on April 8.
Recall that in 2021 an agreement was signed for the supply of a small batch of Igla-S MANPADS. The second contract for the supply of 120 launchers and 400 missiles was signed in November 2022.
The contract stipulated that the first batch of complexes would arrive from Russia, but the following would be assembled in India. The Russian side promised to transfer technology for the manufacture of MANPADS to an Indian company.
The Indian Army needs to replace the obsolete Igla-1M MANPADS systems. In addition to Igla-S, New Delhi plans to add its own VSHORADS systems.
Recently, the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization conducted flight tests of these systems.
Recall that a few days ago the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmitry Kuleba, visited India, who stated that the degree of cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow would supposedly only decrease over time.
