The Vatican published this Monday a new text dedicated to respect for “human dignity”, which criticizes “surrogacy”, gender reassignment and “gender theory”, while defending the rights of LGBTQIA+ and migrants.
The text, called “Dignitas Infinite” and approved by Pope Francis, is the result of five years of work and was published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the influential Holy See body responsible for the dogma, which lists cases of “specific and serious violations” of dignity.
Surrogacy or “surrogate motherhood” is described as “a complete contradiction of the fundamental dignity of every human being”, a deplorable practice which results in “an extremely deserving child becoming a mere object”.
In this regard, we recall the Pope’s call for “the international community to commit itself to prohibiting this practice everywhere.”
Sex reassignment and “gender theory” have been heavily criticized, which the Vatican classifies as “a very dangerous ideological colonization” that seeks to “deny the greatest possible difference between living beings: sexual difference.”
“Any gender reassignment procedure usually carries the risk of compromising the unique dignity that a person has received from the moment of conception,” he adds.
At the same time, the Church emphasizes the right to respect for LGBTQIA+ people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, homosexual, intersex, asexual and other people of different sexual orientations and gender identities), condemning “the fact that in certain places, many people are being arrested , tortured and even deprived of good things in life just because of their sexual orientation.”
The document also censors violence against women, stating that “the phenomenon of feminicide will never be sufficiently condemned” and also mentions “digital violence” which “jeopardizes the good reputation of any person through fake news and defamation.”
“A very dangerous crisis of moral feeling” is the “acceptance of abortion in mentality and in law,” and in the fact that euthanasia and assisted suicide are sometimes called “laws of death with dignity.”
Other violations of human dignity are “the unequal distribution of wealth” and “war,” as well as sexual violence, a phenomenon that “also affects the Church and represents a serious obstacle to its mission.”
The text also reaffirms the need to protect the dignity of migrants and condemns human trafficking, organ and tissue trafficking, sexual exploitation of boys and girls and slave labor, as well as drug and arms trafficking, terrorism, international organized crime, disgraceful working conditions” or the dismissal of persons with disabilities.
