The Order of Biologists (OB) this Monday lamented that conservation has been taken out of the control of the new government body, which it regards with “great concern,” and the “fragility” of issues relating to the environment and territory.
“A mature democracy in a democratic, supportive Europe, caring for the present without mortgaging the future, must value the environment as the highest good, guaranteeing survival and sustainability,” warns OB in its statement.
Under the new government, nature and forest conservation are no longer part of the Ministry of Environment. The nature reserve disappeared, and the forests came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture.
OB understands that environmental assessment includes public policies in the areas of nature conservation, protection of terrestrial and marine environments, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and energy transition, conservation and development of natural capital as essential.
“Strangely enough, some of these issues were absent from the known structure of the XXIV Constitutional Government,” the statement said, regretting that these portfolios had lost political significance.
Regarding the organic aspect, the order notes, “with some concern that issues of a more scientific and technical nature, relating to the environment and territory, considered holistically, and not simply as producers of services with high financial returns, are, at least superficially technical and politically more fragile and/or forgotten.”
Spatial planning, climate and nature conservation are not issues of left or right, but are complex areas with international commitments that involve commitments and negotiations, warn biologists, citing as examples, among others, the commitments of the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030 or the management of national networks protected and classified areas or even the application of the Climate Law.
The OB said it hopes these issues will be included in the government program in parallel with the “main economic and social dossiers” as they are “fundamental elements for the development and acceleration of economic policy, social development and the quality of life of citizens.” life “.
