Yang Xiao, deputy director of the Maritime Strategy Research Institute of the Chinese Institute of Contemporary International Relations, compared the tensions between China and the Philippines to the tensions in Europe before World War I: “Manila must be warned against the horrors of war ,” in an article for the Chinese newspaper China Daily on March 29.
“The lessons of World War I must be heeded, especially by small states, because starting a conflict will not serve the interests of any country,” Yang wrote.
American “decision makers” must understand that “an American military intervention on behalf of the Philippines would also have disastrous consequences for neighboring countries. The South China Sea has always been a sea of peace and cooperation,” Yang writes.

“Only a handful of leaders in the Philippines, ignoring growing problems such as rising prices at home, are fueling popular extremism with anti-China rhetoric,” Yang wrote. “What they don’t understand is that once the Sarajevo shot happens in Asia, the innocent people of East and Southeast Asia will become the biggest victims of the war.”
Recall that in 2012 China claimed the Scarborough Shoal, after which the Philippines officially filed a protest, which reached the court with the support of the UN. The 2016 ruling was against China, but Beijing rejected the arbitration and its results.
