The women’s saber fencing competition took place on April 9 on the last day of the Russian Championships in the village of Kondratovo, on the outskirts of Perm, the press service of the Russian Fencing Federation reported.
The national teams of the capital “Moscow-1” and “Moscow-2” competed for first place. The final match of the tournament began with the victory of the individual championship champion, Olga Nikitina, who overtook the first team. She was in the lead for six fights. “Moscow-2”, however, maintained its chances of winning, when Alina Pastukhova’s victory in the seventh match with 9:5 reduced the difference to a minimum of 34:35. However, Tokyo Olympic champions Sofia Velikaya and Olga Nikitina won the final battles, leading Moscow-1 to victory with a score of 45:38.
The team from the Novosibirsk region, which lost to Moscow-2 in the semifinals with a score of 40:45, took third place, winning the bronze medal match over the third team from the capital with a score of 45:26. In total, 14 Russian teams and the Belarusian national team participated in the saber tournament of the Russian Fencing Championship.
