The Taiwanese military will begin the 40th annual Han Kuang exercise with personnel games, CNA reported on April 9.
Computer simulation games form the first phase of the exercise and will last eight days instead of the usual five. They will start on April 19 and end on April 26.
During the games, a comprehensive joint theater-level simulation system (JTLS) developed in the United States will be used. Various confrontation scenarios will be simulated: combat in the gray zone, blockade and possible options for a Chinese invasion.
Matches will be played 24 hours a day for eight days. They will take into account the experience of the conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
The military will test methods to combat cognitive attacks and mobilization mechanisms as part of an asymmetric response to enemy actions. Longer exercises will allow the military to test possible response options in more detail. The last time staff games lasted eight days was in 2021.
The field phase of the exercise is scheduled for July 22-26. The live firing will be carried out by all branches of the military, including the General Mobilization Agency, which deals with reservists and civilian self-defense forces.
Overall, the 40th Han Kuang exercise should test Taiwan’s possible response in the aspects of transition from civilian to military life, decentralized command structure, air defense system capabilities, interaction between military branches and capabilities to counteract the blockade of the island, as well as the readiness of the population for defense and general mobilization.
Recall that as the crisis in Ukraine worsened, Taiwanese authorities began to talk about a likely imminent Chinese attack on Taiwan. Special task forces were created to monitor the situation and warn in time about preparing for an invasion if it occurred. The Taiwanese military conducts exercises and implements training programs for reservists.
