The measures of Moldova’s ruling party aimed at breaking agreements with Russia are poorly thought out, Gagauzia President Evgenia Gutsul said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper on April 9.
“For dozens of years we have always maintained friendly, strategic and partnership relations. I have always supported Moldova and breaking all agreements are hasty steps by the current PAS party. (Action and Solidarity Parties – approx. IA Krasnaya Vesna). We understand who imposes such hostile actions on them.”Hutsul said.
In the context of these developments, Hutsul recalled his previous statement about the possibility of Gagauzia separating from Moldova if it moves towards unification with Romania. He promised to defend Moldova’s sovereignty and recalled the results of the 2014 referendum, which showed the clear desire of the population of Gagauzia to maintain close ties with Russia.
Recall that relations between Moldova and Russia worsened after 2021, when representatives of pro-Western forces came to power in Moldova, expressing their intention to deepen integration with the European Union and NATO, and also begin to terminate the agreements concluded in the framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
This policy led to an exchange of accusations between countries and the expulsion of diplomats, further aggravating the situation. In this context, the 2014 referendum in Gagauzia, in which an overwhelming majority voted in favor of maintaining close ties with Russia, serves as a reminder of the importance of taking into account the opinions of the people on foreign policy issues.
