The President of the Republic expresses his condolences and pays tribute to Eugenio Lisboa

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on Tuesday expressed condolences over the death of essayist, poet and literary critic Eugenio Lisboa, to whom he paid tribute, noting that he had been his friend since his days in Mozambique.

Eugenio Lisboa, an expert on the work of the writer José Regio, died on Tuesday morning in Lisbon at the age of 93 from cancer.

In a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet, the head of state remembers Eugenio Lisboa as “a critic and essayist, with equal pleasure in evaluating minority authors and challenging canonical ones.”

“Born in Lourenço Marques in 1930, he was a decisive figure in the intellectual life of pre-independence Mozambique, writing in newspapers and directing supplements; he later found himself a very active cultural adviser at the Portuguese Embassy in London; and has maintained a constant presence in the Portuguese press for decades in a cultured, distinctive and passionate manner,” the statement said.

The President of the Republic emphasizes that Eugenio Lisboa was the author of famous critical collections such as the Chronicle of the Plague Years or the Indícios de Oiro, as well as “copious essays on José Reggio and presenticism.”

“He also left us some memories in six volumes. And he wrote to the end, publishing a book of poems a few days ago,” he adds.

The head of state noted that in 2019 he awarded Eugenio Lisbon the title of Knight of the Order of Sant’Iago da Espada.
