A group of politicians from the parliament of the Uckermark (Brandenburg) region sent a letter to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bundestag President Berber Bass demanding to stop the supply of weapons to Ukraine, the Welt newspaper reported on April 10.
The letter was reportedly signed by 32 of 51 deputies. The authors of the letter were Wolfgang Bandit and Karina Delk of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), but among the signatories of the letter were also representatives of several parties, including Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD), the ruling Free Democrats ( FDP), the Left Party and the right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD).
“We write to you with deep concern about a further escalation of the war and with the expectation of taking responsibility for a peaceful solution instead of a further supply of weapons,” the publication quotes an excerpt from the letter.
The authors of the letter also condemn Russia and express solidarity with Ukraine. However, they advocate a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
As noted in the letter, the transfer of arms is not a solution to the conflict and is morally unacceptable, especially given Germany’s past. The politicians who signed the letter call on Germany to return to its policy of refusing to supply weapons to areas of hostilities and crises.
