Gagauzia authorities will ask Russia for help if Moldova sends troops to autonomy, Gagauzia head Evgenia Gutsul said, RIA Novosti reports on April 10.
Hutsul stated that Gagauzia will begin the process of secession from Moldova if the Moldovan authorities decide to unite with Romania. He explained that in response to such a measure, Moldova could send troops to the Gagauz autonomy. In this case, Gagauzia will ask everyone for help, including Russia.
“I hope it doesn’t come to that. I hope for common sense from our authorities. But if it comes to that, we will contact all countries, of course, including the Russian Federation.” – Hutsul explained.
The head of the autonomy noted that the Gagauz autonomy wants to live as part of an independent Moldova, but the autonomy authorities will take action if the Moldovan government decides to unite with Romania.
Let us remember that on April 4, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu supported the idea of uniting the country with Moldova. In 2022, the parliaments of Moldova and Romania held a joint meeting.
Let us also remember that in March 2024, the Institute of Sociological and Marketing Surveys IMAS conducted a survey among residents of Moldova. When asked if they would vote for a president who promoted the idea of unifying the republic with Romania, only 8% of those surveyed answered affirmatively.
