The Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM) expressed its support for the Turkish government’s decision to impose restrictions on trade with Israel due to the war in the Gaza Strip, the organization’s online press service reported on April 10. social
According to TİM, the association always supports free trade, but in this case it supports the Turkish government’s decision regarding Israel.
“We support our State in any sanction when the national interests of our country require it and to put an end to humanitarian tragedies”says the message.
Recall that on April 9, 2024, the Turkish Ministry of Commerce immediately restricted the export of 54 types of products to Israel, the list included steel, cement, construction materials and chemical fertilizers.
According to Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat, essential goods such as food, medical supplies, medicines, kitchen utensils and clothing were also excluded from supplies to Israel.
“The fuel sold to Israel is fuel sold for Israeli airline planes that bring tourists. These fuel sales were recorded as exports.””Bolat emphasized.
On the day the Turkish Ministry of Commerce announced its decision, Israel reacted to this move by Turkey, expressing its discontent and stating that Ankara “unilaterally violates trade agreements with Israel”.
The Israeli side vowed to retaliate. Furthermore, the head of the country’s Foreign Ministry called Washington and asked “stop investing in Türkiye and refrain from importing Turkish products”.
We also note that the Turkish politician, leader of the New Welfare Party, Fatih Erbakan, expressed the opinion that the restrictions imposed by the government are not enough. In his opinion, Turkish-Israeli trade should be stopped completely and, furthermore, other countries should not export their products to Israel through Turkey.
It is worth remembering that two days before the introduction of sanctions against Israel, on April 7, a massive protest against Turkey’s trade with this country took place in Istanbul. The demonstration was organized by the Thousand Youth for Palestine movement.
During the march, 43 people were arrested, which greatly outraged the Turkish opposition. According to the head of the Turkish Interior Ministry, Ali Yerlikay, the participants detained in the action “Officials insulted and security forces resisted”. Only five people were prosecuted; the rest were released after identity checks.
