The Swiss government will increase support for economic development and reconstruction of Ukraine by 5 billion euros until 2036.
The decision was made at a weekly meeting of the executive branch, which recognized that it was “a strong sign of solidarity with those affected by the war in Ukraine and a desire to contribute to greater stability on the European continent.”
Switzerland plans to allocate the first amount of 1.5 billion Swiss francs (1.527 billion euros) from the budget for international cooperation until 2028.
To reach full support by 2036, authorities said they would seek other sources of funding beyond their cooperation budget.
The World Bank estimates that the amount needed to fully rebuild Ukraine after the Russian military offensive will be around 450 billion euros.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the Swiss Confederation has supported projects in Ukraine aimed at rebuilding civilian energy and medical infrastructure, as well as destroyed roads and highways.
