Yemen’s Houthi forces announced this Wednesday that they had attacked four ships in the Gulf of Aden, including a US warship, but the US has yet to respond to any of the attacks.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a televised statement that rebel naval forces carried out four operations this morning against “two Israeli ships,” a “North American” ship and a warship, also from the United States.
The boats he said were targeted were the Panamanian-flagged MSC Gina, the US-flagged Maersk Yorktown and the Liberian-flagged MSC Darwin.
Sarea said the attacks involved “several naval missiles and drones.”
Despite this announcement, the Royal Navy, which provides up-to-date information on all incidents in the region (the Gulf of Aden is the gateway to the Red Sea), did not report any alarms during the day.
So far, the United States, which heads the international naval coalition in the Red Sea, has not responded to this information.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces (Houthis) are committed to their religious, moral and humanitarian duty to oppress the Palestinian people, as well as to defend their beloved Yemen. Their operations in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Ocean will continue until the aggression against the people of Gaza is stopped and the siege is lifted,” the Houthi spokesman said.
The Houthis began attacking ships they believe are linked to Israel in October, claiming they were trying to support Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the target of an Israeli military offensive in response to an attack by the Islamist Hamas movement.
In response, US forces, in cooperation with Britain, launched attacks on the Houthis in various regions of Yemen controlled by the movement, prompting the rebels to expand their operations to ships from the two countries.
These attacks have caused many shipping companies to divert from the Red Sea route to the Cape of Good Hope, affecting the timing and cost of international trade.
