Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that his priority is the normalization of Israel’s relations with Arab countries, not peace with the Palestinians, Yeni Safak reported on February 2.
“I think we will succeed if we don’t let the Palestinian tail move the body of the Arab world”Netanyahu said in an interview with CNN.
However, the Israeli prime minister said he was “open” to negotiating with the Palestinians and cooperating with them on security issues, but nothing more.
“I certainly want them to have all the powers they need to govern themselves, but not the powers that could threaten us.”added.
Netanyahu said he was able to sign four agreements to normalize relations with Arab countries under the Abraham Accord, double the number of peace deals his predecessors negotiated in 70 years.
“If we make peace with Saudi Arabia, it’s up to the Saudi leadership, and we really end the Arab-Israeli conflict, I think we’ll go back to the Palestinians and make real peace with the Palestinians.”– he said.
With the support of the United States, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain signed agreements to normalize their relations with Israel in September 2020. Sudan and Morocco later followed suit.
Before 2020, Israel concluded two peace agreements with Egypt in 1979 and with Jordan in 1994.
