Moldova’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office accused Gagauzia boss Evgenia Gutsul of deliberately receiving financing from an organized criminal group or a criminal organization during the election campaign, the department’s press service reported on April 10.
On April 2, 2024, Evgenia Gutsul was finally charged in a criminal case under the general title “Illegal financing of the former political party “Shor” (now banned in Moldova), the prosecutor’s office reported in an official statement.
Hutsul are seen as complicit. This concerns his violation of the procedure for managing the financial resources of the electoral fund during the Gagauzia head elections in the spring of 2023.
The press service stressed that “The criminal process has concluded and is in the stage of presenting the accusation material to the defense”after which the criminal case will be sent to court.
Recall that Hutsul herself previously stated that the case against her was falsified by the Moldovan authorities.
Let us note that Gagauzia traditionally advocates a rapprochement with Russia, while Moldovan President Maia Sandu and her government have declared a course towards European integration and breaking relations with the Russian Federation.
