Russia fully complies with its obligations under the Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits the placement of weapons in outer space, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Nebenzya, told reporters on April 11.
Commenting on the proposal of the United States and Japan to formalize an additional agreement on outer space, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya highlighted Moscow’s fundamental compliance with international agreements on outer space.
“It is wrong to say that the international community is not addressing this issue. Since the adoption of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, there has been a clear prohibition on participating countries to deploy WMD (weapons of mass destruction – approx. IA Krasnaya Vesna) in outer space. “Russia fully fulfills its obligations under this agreement.”. – Nebencia said.
The diplomat added that the US-Japan draft resolution is aimed at politicizing the issue and that as Russia prepares a resolution to ban the placement of nuclear weapons in space, Western states are trying to avoid adopting amendments that would completely prohibit any type of weapon in space.
“They (Western countries in the UN Security Council – approx. IA Krasnaya Vesna) resist and reject our amendments aimed at preventing any type of weapons in space.”Nebenzya emphasized.
Recall that previously the head of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Sergei Shoigu, stated that Russia has not made nor plans to place nuclear weapons outside the Earth.
