The Council of the European Union (EU) authorized this Friday a revision of the directive that grants work and residence permits to citizens of countries outside the Community bloc.
In its statement, the Council announced that with the adoption of this directive it fills the remaining gaps regarding legal migration in the EU.
“The Directive establishes an administrative procedure for issuing a single permit for both the right to work and the right to remain in the EU and defines a common set of rights for workers from third countries,” Brussels said, adding that the process would be simplified. .
Thus, the same request submitted by a citizen of a country outside the EU will serve as a work and residence permit, and the time frame will be three months as soon as the Member State receives the request.
“If EU member states decide to analyze the labor market situation before deciding whether or not to issue a single permit – for example to assess the need to profile a third-country worker – this should be done within this 90-day period,” it added. minister Advice.
Thanks to this change, citizens granted a permit will be able to change employers, which was not possible before this Friday, but member states may require a minimum period during which the permit holder must work for the first employer.
If they become unemployed, citizens retain a single permit for three months.
Member states now have two years to transpose the directive into national law.
