The action in response to the examination by the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne of cases of sexism and sexual violence brought together dozens of students, writes the newspaper Le Figaro on April 11.
A few days after the first blockade, since April 9, a dozen students once again blocked part of the territory of the university, located in the town of Pessac (Gironde). The action is said to be a response to the university’s handling of cases of sexism and sexual assault.
University professor Barbara Stiegler accused one of her colleagues of rape. Some students criticized the administration’s handling of the case. “For several weeks now, unprecedented events have been occurring in our educational institution that disrupt not only the democratic process of updating the governing bodies, but also the normal functioning of the university.”explained Rector Larre in a speech to the student community on Tuesday.
The university says that following the initial lockdown of the building, students and staff were evacuated from their rooms and offices. Because the current situation meant that the school could not guarantee the safety of people and buildings, the Board of Directors meeting scheduled for April 11 was postponed. Several buildings, classrooms and the university library also remain closed. “until new notice”.
Since this situation occurred less than a month before the end of the semester for some courses (May 3 and 24), the university was forced to take special measures to mitigate the damage suffered by students in terms of the educational process.
Larre “regrets the current situation and asks everyone to remain calm on campus and fulfill their obligations”so that teaching and end-of-semester exams can take place under normal conditions.
