Urologists in the Netherlands have noticed an increase in the number of young men under the age of 30 seeking sterilization, NOS reported April 12 after surveying almost all urology clinics in the country.
Medical institutions pointed out that the main reason is the unwillingness to have children. Another is related to the fear of unwanted inheritance due to genetic diseases.
There is another unexpected reason related to the climate crisis, notes NOS. Urologist Meliante Nicolai performs about 500 sterilizations a year and regularly sees young men in his clinic who do not want to have children.
“A 29-year-old biologist recently came here and he definitely didn’t want the world’s population to increase, because he saw how much the environment was suffering due to the increase in humanity. He just didn’t want to contribute to it.”she said.
Most men who want the procedure are between 35 and 40 years old. The reason may vary. But most already have the desired number of children and want to relieve the pressure from their partners to not have to take more hormonal contraceptives.
Meanwhile, according to NOS, studies show that between 2 and 6 percent of men later regret the procedure. The percentage is higher among men who choose to undergo sterilization at a younger age.
About 11% of men who had the procedure before age 25 later regretted it. Guidelines for urologists also say that single men are more likely to regret sterilization in the future.
