Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized a ship it said was “linked to Israel” and was being transferred into the country’s territorial waters, Reuters reported, citing Iranian state news agency IRNA. A Navy Guards Special Forces helicopter boarded and captured it.
The Associated Press (AP) initially said the ship involved in the attack was to be the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, which is associated with international company Zodiac Maritime, part of a group owned by Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer.
The Tasmin news agency, linked to the Revolutionary Guard, later confirmed that the robbed ship was the MSC Aries, calling it a boat “linked to the Zionist regime.”
The attack is part of escalating tensions between Iran and the West.
According to the newspaper, a Middle East defense official blamed Iran for the attack.
Since 2019, Iran has been accused of involvement in several robberies and attacks on ships in the Gulf of Oman, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil trade passes.
Tensions marked over the past six months by the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip have recently intensified following the April 1 bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, which killed senior Iranian military officials and was blamed on Tel Aviv. Aviv.
