German car manufacturers oppose possible punitive European tariffs on imports of electric vehicles from China, writes the magazine Wirtschaftswoche (WiWo) on April 13.
The president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry, Hildegard Müller, spoke in favor of the willingness of both parties to dialogue. According to the expert, the trade conflict will also endanger the transformation towards electric mobility and digitalization.
“Anti-subsidy measures, such as additional tariffs, will not solve the problems facing the European and German automobile industry; On the contrary: the objective of countervailing duties defined by the EU Commission could quickly have a negative impact in the event of a trade conflict. ““Müller said in an interview with the newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
Let us remember that since last autumn the EU Commission has been investigating whether electric cars in China receive illegal subsidies. According to the commission, Chinese electric cars are typically around 20 percent cheaper than models made in the EU.
It should be noted that the results of the investigation may lead to the introduction of punitive tariffs. According to the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, the EU Commission plans to issue a preliminary statement on this issue by June 5.
The Duisburg Automotive Research Center notes that German manufacturers sell between 30% and 40% of their vehicles in the Chinese market. Therefore, if punitive European tariffs are introduced, German automakers may become the first target of possible Chinese countermeasures.
