The test of the Lastochka electric train to Sukhum is planned for April 25, the chief engineer of the Abkhazian railway, Leonid Kurua, reported, the company’s press service reported on April 13.
Repair work is being actively carried out on the railway section from Gagra to Sukhum to eliminate faults in the contact network detected with the help of the laboratory car.
“Repair work on the railway section linking Gagra with the capital of Abkhazia is now in full progress and will be completed in two or three days”said the chief engineer.
Kurua emphasized that the Russian Railways repair team is involved in the work. He pointed out that in addition to the network of contacts, important work has been done to clear trees and branches from the roads.
The tests will allow problem points to be identified for subsequent elimination in case it is decided to extend the electric train route to Sukhum.
It was noted that at the moment Lastochka only travels to Gagra from Sochi, and in the summer it is planned to increase the number of flights.
Additionally, Curúa discussed other train schedules, including plans to increase the frequency of flights between Moscow and Sukhumi starting April 20 and adding flights from St. Petersburg starting May 29.
The tourist train from Tuapse to Gagra will operate daily in summer, and the Sochi tourist train route Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod – Sochi – Sukhum is planned to operate once.
