Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Saturday that he wants to start a debate in the country on amending the Constitution to include life imprisonment for corruption crimes and treason.
“I want to make you an offer that I have been thinking about for a whole year and which I believe the time has come to put into practice. Many times traitors, sellers of the country, corrupt people act by making a mockery of the law and I think the time has come for constitutional reform to introduce in our Constitution the punishment of life imprisonment for corruption, high treason and heinous crimes against the people,” he said .
Nicolas Maduro addressed supporters in Caracas at a meeting marking the 22nd anniversary of the events that temporarily removed former President Hugo Chavez (1954-2013) from power in April 2002.
