Governments around the world call for de-escalation in the Middle East

Many leaders have expressed their “deep concern” following the Iranian response to Israel. Some powers have gone a step further and have openly positioned themselves on Israel’s side.

Iran’s response to the April 1 Israeli attack on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus has sparked an reaction cascade of governments around the world, all advocating de-escalation and reducing tensions; the difference lies in their level of support for Israel.

In Middle EastEgypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have shown their “deep concern” about the evolution of the situation in the region and have called for containment, moderation and dialogue to reduce tension.

Between the Asian countries, the superpowers Russia and China have also shown their concern about the “dangerous escalation” and have called on the parties to act calmly and moderately, to avoid further escalations. Pakistan, China and Japan have also advocated de-escalation.

Several leaders and government representatives of the United States have spoken along the same lines. Europe, among them, those of Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, which have condemned the attack and have called for containment and to avoid further escalations. Belgium has called a ceasefire in Gaza to de-escalate tension.

For their part, the United Kingdom, Austria, Hungary, France and Germany have “firmly” condemned Iran’s attacks against Israel. Macron has reiterated Paris’ “commitment” “to the security of Israel, partners and regional stability”, in addition to calling for restraint.

German Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said that “in these difficult hours, Germany stands by Israel.”

The governments of Austria and Hungary condemned Iran’s attack against Israel and, in addition to showing solidarity with Tel Aviv, expressed concern about the risk of escalation in the Middle East conflict.

The head of the Austrian Government, the conservative Karl Nehammer, has written in X: “Austria supports Israel and we call on Iran to immediately end any hostility.”

In Hungary, the prime minister, the ultranationalist Viktor Orbán, also condemned the attack in recent hours. “We condemn last night’s attack against Israel and pray for the safety of the Israeli people,” Orbán said on X.

In it American continentIn addition to the US, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay have expressed strong condemnation of the attack perpetrated by Iran against Israel. In addition to expressing its firm support for Israel, this bloc of countries has urged the international community to take decisive measures to guarantee the security of the Jewish State and prevent future aggressions.

Like Ecuador and Peru, these countries have highlighted the importance of maintaining stability and peace in the Middle East, as well as the need to hold accountable those who violate international law and threaten global security.

In contrast, nations governed by leftist leaders such as Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and Bolivia have remained silent, without issuing public statements about the attack.
