Israel must end its 17-year blockade of the Gaza Strip, a European delegation said while visiting the Palestinian enclave for the first time in 2023, WAFA reported on February 2.
“Gaza remains a priority for the EU and its member states. The humanitarian situation is a matter of grave concern. The time has come to end the blockade of the Gaza Strip, achieve Palestinian reconciliation and restore democratic legitimacy. The EU stands ready to support these critical processes.”the EU mission said on Twitter.
During the visit, 15 heads of mission from the European Union met with Palestinian Authority officials. They visited an all-girls preparatory school in Jabalia, where they received briefings from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and visited Egyptian-funded reconstruction projects and a Turkish hospital treating cancer patients. .
Israel imposed a land, sea and air blockade on the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2 million economically struggling Palestinians, in 2007 when the Islamist organization Hamas came to power.
