They also found blades hidden in the room, indicating that Ella was self-harming. As a result, the parents hid all the scissors, knives and other sharp objects to protect their daughter.

Ella’s mother explains that when you have a child with a mental illness, “you live in the moment, day by day.”

“The consequences of a suicidal child are devastating for the entire family, especially because we don’t know how to support them,” he adds.

Ella is now 18 and in stable condition. He is also in remission from Crohn’s disease and anorexia, having regained all of his weight. She has given up self-harm and plans to work in the NHS because doctors have helped her so much.
