At least 19 people were found dead and two more missing after a landslide in central Indonesia, local authorities said on April 14.
The dead and two survivors were evacuated from two villages hit by landslides in Tana Toraja district, South Sulawesi province, on the afternoon of April 13, said the head of the local emergency management agency, Suleiman Maliya.
“19 people died, four in southern Makale and another 15 in Makale villages.”Malia told AFP.
“We are currently still searching for other victims,” he said, adding that there are still two people reported missing and believed to be buried under the rubble.
Tana Toraja and its surroundings are “constantly subject to heavy rain, especially last week, almost non-stop,” Malia added.
According to him, heavy rains eroded the soil of residential areas located on the slopes of the mountains, causing landslides that buried the houses of local residents.
Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season and in some places the problem is exacerbated by deforestation, with prolonged heavy rain causing flooding in some areas of the archipelago.
