Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili supports protesters in Tbilisi against the draft law on foreign agents. She announced it on April 15 from the social network X.
Zurabishvili called the initiative on foreign agents “Russian law” and criticized the police, who prepared special forces, water cannons and tear gas against the “peaceful” protest.
“Georgia will not surrender to re-Sovietization!” – she wrote.
According to the president, the protesters defend Georgia’s European future.
Recall that on April 15, consideration of a bill that requires organizations that receive funding from abroad to report expenses began in Georgia. Deputies plan to adopt the document today.
Members of pro-Western opposition parties, their supporters and NGOs that could be subject to the foreign agents law gathered near the Georgian parliament. Clashes with the police began and some activists were arrested.
In March 2023 there was already an attempt to pass such a law, which also caused protests. Opponents of control over NGO funding staged riots in Tbilisi, including throwing Molotov cocktails at police. Zurabishvili approved of his actions. The bill was not adopted then.
The initiative is promoted by the ruling Georgian Dream party. The President of the Republic performs representative functions and has no powers of authority; The country is governed by the government. Zurabishvili and the government have been at odds for more than two years.
