The danger of a major nuclear accident at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant remains very real, despite the transition of the reactors to cold shutdown mode, said the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi. , on April 15 at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
“Although six reactors at the power plant are now in cold shutdown and the last power unit was moved to this state two days ago on the recommendation of the IAEA, the potential danger of a serious nuclear accident remains very real.” .Grossi said.
Recall that from April 7 to 9, the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was attacked by Ukrainian drones. Impacts were recorded on the dome of the station’s sixth power unit, in the dining area and also in the loading port area. The plant’s press service noted that the NPP system did not suffer critical damage.
On April 13, IAEA experts stationed at the plant recorded 16 artillery explosions in half an hour, some of which occurred at a fairly close distance from the nuclear power plant.
On the same day, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi supported the decision to “cold shutdown” all six reactor units at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to ensure their safety.
