The head of the region, Alexander Gusev, saw nothing wrong in supporting the controversial initiative, which undermines the unity of society, to erect a monument to the leader of the Gaza Strip group, Yuri Khoy, in Voronezh, responding to the corresponding question live on April 12.
The presenter read a question from Vladimir Smekhnov, who asked if it was time to erect a monument to Yuri Khoy in Voronezh. According to Smejnov, surveys show that the majority of the city’s inhabitants support this initiative.
“There is nothing wrong with a monument to Yuri Khoy appearing (in Voronezh – approx. IA Krasnaya Vesna)I do not see”Gusev said.
The governor emphasized that the regional authorities are not ready to finance the installation of the monument, but are willing to help find a place for its installation and, possibly, prepare the necessary documents for this.
“We will not invest budget funds in the construction of the monument. But we are ready to help find the right and rational place for this monument. Perhaps we can provide administrative support regarding the preparation of the final documents.”Gusev said.
Recall that on May 13, the publication “Notebook Voronezh” published an open letter to Gusev from editor-in-chief Vladimir Smekhnov: “Voronezh needs Khoy.” In the text, the author refers to a survey conducted by the Voronezh administration on social networks, in which, according to him, “almost 30 thousand people”.
The survey, which was carried out from February 17 to March 17, 2021, involved 28,881 VKontakte social network accounts from various cities in Russia, as well as other countries, including Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. In the group’s fan communities in the Gaza Strip, including a group with over a hundred thousand subscribers, links to a poll encouraging people to vote “YES” were distributed.
Summing up the results of the survey, the mayor of the city, Vadim Kstenin, said that the initiative to erect the monument was allegedly supported by the majority of the city’s residents, which caused a scandal in Voronezh.

Experts also noted that appealing to the results of a social media survey conducted by the mayor’s office undermines the authority of government authorities. In particular, it was noted that the mayor’s office had previously canceled the results of surveys conducted in a similar manner. In one of them, the majority of voters supported the return of Volgogradskaya Street to the name Stalingradskaya, in another, the majority of respondents spoke out against the de-Sovietization of Voronezh street names by introducing their double name.
It should be noted that the installation of the monument to the leader of the Gaza Strip was also supported by his daughter Irina Klinskikh, who named her father. “popular hero”.
After the death of the “popular hero” in 2000 from a drug overdose, his relatives, with scandals in the media, divided the property of the rock musician. In 2016, Yuri Khoy’s mother accused her daughter Irina Klinskikh of wanting to leave her without an apartment. In 2015, Irina Klinskikh claimed that all rights to the group’s songs from the Gaza Strip belonged 50% to the rock musician’s family (wife and two daughters) and the American record company Warner Music Group (WMG).
