The three-month-old baby entered the Santa Casa da Misericordia nursery school in Penalva do Castelo on Monday morning and nothing could have predicted what would happen around lunchtime.
It was not yet one o’clock in the afternoon when the staff realized that something was wrong with the girl.
He was already in cardiopulmonary arrest. The facility’s nurses immediately began basic life support maneuvers until the Penalva do Castelo volunteer firefighters arrived.
“We continued the maneuvers for another two hours, but the VMER doctor pronounced him dead on the spot,” complained commander Jose Manuel Lopez.
The autopsy results will help unravel the cause of death. The ombudsman has scheduled a meeting on Tuesday to provide further clarification on the case.
