The United States invited the Russian Federation to cancel mutual countermeasures and return to the New START Treaty

The United States invited the Russian Federation to cancel mutual countermeasures and return to the New START Treaty

U.S. officials have announced their readiness to abandon countermeasures previously taken under the Strategic and Offensive Further Reductions and Limitations Treaty (START) if Russia decides to return to compliance with its obligations under the agreement, according to a State Department report. of the US published on April 16 on countries’ compliance with arms control agreements.

According to the document, the United States expressed its desire and willingness to cancel its countermeasures and fully comply with the New START Treaty if Russia also returns to compliance with the treaty. The State Department highlighted that the United States has not taken countermeasures to key New START restrictions and continues to comply fully with them. Additionally, Washington continues to notify Moscow in advance of launches of its intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Previously, in his speech to the Federal Assembly in 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START Treaty, while emphasizing that the country is not withdrawing from the treaty. According to him, before returning to the discussion, it is necessary to understand what countries like France and Great Britain are claiming and how to include their strategic arsenals in NATO’s overall strike potential. On February 28, 2023, an official note on the suspension of Russia’s participation in the New START Treaty was transmitted to the US side.

New START, the only existing agreement between Russia and the United States on nuclear arms control, expires in 2026. The agreement was signed in 2010 and entered into force in 2011, and in 2021 it was extended for 5 years.
